Catholic countries are not immune to the apostasy that has plagued the West, but I must admit that I held out hope for Ireland. G.K. Chesterton once said of the Irish: "The average ...Irishman is close to...domesticity because he is close to the earth; he is close to doctrinal theology and elaborate ritual because he is close to the earth. In short he is close to the heavens because he is close to the earth."

I suppose the increase in materialism and consumerism that was brought about by the "Celtic Tiger" boom obliterated the closeness to the earth and much of the faith.
